ECUADOR AND THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS BESPOKE TRAVEL
the destination
Ecuador is located in north-western South America and is bordered by Colombia in the North, Peru in the East and South, and the Pacific Ocean in the West. It also includes the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific. This compact country is an explosion of colors, comprised of breath-taking landscapes, and postcard-like views; it has a cultural splendor and is known for hosting an astonishing variety of species. Ecuador is the ideal destination for people looking for adventure and are nature-lovers.
The cities in Ecuador are well worth the detour, especially Quito and Cuenca, with their 17th-century churches and architectural gems dating back from the Spanish colonial days. Beyond these cities lies even more beauty: Andean villages and their markets, historic haciendas and rolling fields set against the beautiful verdant backdrop of the Amazon. Some of the most popular sport activities include horse-riding, hiking, mountain biking, white-water rafting and surfing on tight breaks.
The Ecuadorian Amazon is an amazing place to discover and is full of interesting facts; indeed, it is home to a truly astounding biodiversity with 800 species of fish, 350 species of reptiles and over 300 species of mammals. Furthermore, it is a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 1’600 species of birds. In addition, there are uncontested ethnic groups of people, including two small tribes: the Taromenane and the Tagaeri life in the Amazon jungle in deliberate isolation, avoiding all contact with the modern world.
The unique creatures that call the legendary Galápagos Islands their home can be found nowhere else in the world. They couldn’t be bothered by human beings as they pursue their daily routines. This huge variety of species was the trigger to inspire a theory that would change the world, and hence today the Galápagos Islands are a fascinating open-air wildlife museum, Darwin’s living laboratory. You will be able to get at close range with gigantic tortoises, marine iguanas, dolphins, whales and killer whales, sea lions, and bats amongst many others.
The Galápagos aren’t typical tropical islands as you would expect to find at the equatorial level of Caribbean islands; in fact, most of the archipelago’s isolated group of volcanic islands don’t have vegetation and feature a moon-like landscape. You will be fascinated and will have the opportunity to go swimming and snorkeling in this megadiverse area.
