PATAGONIA TAILOR-MADE TRAVEL
the destination
Patagonia is a region encompassing the vast southernmost tip of South America, shared by Argentina and Chile, with the Andes Mountains as its dividing line and two coasts. The vast Patagonia region covers about a third of this country and another half of Chile. The weather in this adventurous part of the world is extremely unpredictable and can change at a moment’s notice. It is one of the most uninhabited areas of our planet and hosts an incredible variety of wildlife and plants.
When visiting the Argentine side of Patagonia, you will be facing arid steppes, grasslands and deserts. Off the coast, an incredible marine life can be observed such as the Southern right whales, pods of orcas, elephant seals, sea lions and fur seals, rockhopper penguins, various species of cormorant and Commerson’s dolphins! The Andean Patagonia is the sub-region with the greatest number of places worthwhile to see: there are beautiful towns such as Bariloche on the banks of Nahuel Huapi lake, the UNESCO-listed Cueva de las Manos cave, the extraordinary Los Glaciares National Park with attractions such as the Fitz Roy massif, Lago Argentino and of course, the Perito Moreno glacier.
In comparison, the Chilean Patagonia has glacial fjords and temperate rainforest – complete different feel to what you will observe on the Argentine side. Much of this region is jagged coastline, uninhabited islands, roads that come to dead ends and impenetrable forests and ice fields. There is genuine wilderness, with main roads interrupted by river crossings. Some of the animals that you can see include eagles, condors, tree creepers, woodpeckers and hummingbirds. The centrepiece of this region is the Torres del Paine national park, home to stunning landscapes and pumas.
This region is perhaps best known for being home to some of the most incredible and dramatic landscapes on Earth. Immerse yourself where nature grows wild and beautiful, spaces are large and empty. Go trekking up the countless jagged peaks and valleys, canoe down the rivers and on the lakes, try horse-riding and even biking. Be impressed at the striking scenery you will be seeing, which is the result of major glaciological and geological transformations.
