NORTHERN LIGHTS TRAVEL
the experience
The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, are one of nature’s most magical and mythical spectacles. The pale yellowish-green and pink dancing lights have been fascinating visitors since the dawn of time and are still as enchanting and mysterious as ever. Take the example of Norway where this phenomenon is so engrained in its culture that the government decided to add the neon lights in its residents’ passports by way of a black light feature.
Northern lights are the result of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun’s atmosphere blown by the solar wind and gaseous particles in the earth’s atmosphere. The charged particles are largely deflected by our planet’s magnetic field, but because the earth’s magnetic field is weaker at either pole, some particles enter the earth’s atmosphere and collide with gas particles. This explains why Northern lights can be seen in both the North and South poles. The different colours are due to the type of gas particles that collide together. Many legends roamed around this spectacle before it could be scientifically explained in the 1950’s. Indeed, the Inuit people of Greenland believed the lights came from the ancestors’ spirits playing soccer with the skull of a walrus.
Scandinavian countries for example are home to this seasonal ethereal show, and travellers cross the globe in the hope of watching live this stunning spectacle. The Northern Lights can be observed during about 200 nights per year in the vast Finnish Lapland, where you can chase after them on a reindeer-drawn sleigh ride through the iced towering pines. Iceland is another popular destination for the Aurora Borealis which gets its sky filled with shades of vibrant pink, green and purple lights. Finally, there is Svalbard in Norway, an archipelago in the Barents Sea that experiences perpetual darkness between mid-November and January. This place offers its visitors the opportunity to head out on a snowmobile to experience the aurora and to see arctic foxes running around in their natural environment under the dancing lights.
The Northern Lights offer a magical experience for everyone, including families with their children as you can combine this unique happening with snowshoeing, snowmobiling, a visit to reindeer farms and dog sleighing. This celestial disco is a phenomenon that should not be missed in an eager traveller’s lifetime.
