RWANDA BESPOKE TRAVEL
the destination
Rwanda is one of the smallest countries in East-Central Africa, hemmed in by Uganda to the North, Burundi to the South, Tanzania to the East, and the Democratic Republic of Congo the West. Its climate is temperate to subtropical.
It is today a country where you will feel welcome, a tangible sense of optimism resonating from its towns and colourful villages. Despite its turbulent past, the « Pays des Mille Collines » is now a safe and friendly safari destination, a true gem on the African soil, packed with green and majestic mountains, and its Virunga volcanoes in the northeast play hosts to the famous mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Rwanda features different natural landscapes such as the inland beaches on Lake Kivu, rainforests in Nyungwe Forest National Park, as well as the sophisticated capital of Kigali.
Tucked in between iconic safari destinations, Rwanda offers visitors a unique experience and some of the best primate tracking on the planet: this is the place where you can trek to end up face to face with a wild female mountain gorilla, cradling her infant while scratching her ear with her finger. The steamy forests of Volcanoes National Park are home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, fun-loving Sykes monkeys, the Golden monkeys and the rowdy chimpanzees. About thirty-five years ago, the Virunga population went down because of poaching and habitat loss, but thanks to great conservation efforts, the count has gradually gone up again.
The exciting trek up to the gorillas’ natural habitat offer incredible views in every direction, before you are immersed in the rainforest, alive with the calls of the birds above your head and primates chattering in the branches. Once you arrive in a gorilla’s home, nothing can prepare you with an encounter of a grown silverback, up to three times the size of an average man, yet they stay remarkably tolerant of human visitors.
It’s not only about gorillas though. Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest is one of the most impressive remaining rainforests in Africa and hosts nearly 300 species of birds, primates and rare orchids. Furthermore, and although landlocked, the country exhales a coastal vibe with beaches at Gisenyi and coves at Kibuye on the shores of the translucent-blue Lake Kivu.
